The First Spouse Gold Coin Program was a coin series issued by the U.S. Mint between 2007 and 2016, with each coin celebrating a different Presidential spouse. The twenty-third release in the series was dedicated to Caroline Harrison, First Lady of President Benjamin Harrison from 1889 through 1892. Concerned with charitable work, women’s equality, and the renovation and reorganization of the White House itself, Harrison undertook comprehensive plans for bringing the mansion up to date that would lead to the introduction of electricity and the construction of the East and West wings. She also inaugurated the practice of White House historical preservation, an achievement commemorated by the 2012-W 1/2 oz Proof US Mint First Spouse Caroline Harrison Gold Coin celebrates her legacy.

Caroline Harrison had many achievements to her credit, among them being a co-founder of the Daughters of the American Revolution, but was particularly remembered for her artistic pursuits. She was known for her love of ceramic painting and of flowers, which manifested during her time as First Lady in the collection and organization of White House china for display: the first known instance of historical preservation in the Presidential mansion. This signature interest in the arts is featured in the design of her First Spouse gold coin.
