Proof American Gold Eagles were introduced in 1986 alongside the bullion version of the coin. Designed specifically for the tastes and desires of numismatists, the proof coins were originally available in just a 1 oz weight. Fractional-weight coins, available in bullion right away in 1986, were not introduced in proof until 1987 (1/2 oz) and 1988 (1/4 oz and 1/10 oz).
Each of the American Gold Eagles in this JM Bullion listing has a perfect grade of PR70 from the PCGS. A perfect proof has its full, original mint luster, and features no detracting flaws of any kind. Deep-cameo refers to the coin’s finish, which includes a strong, frosted design set and a deeply-mirrored, clear background.
On the obverse side of each 2012-W ½ oz Proof American Gold Eagle is the image of Lady Liberty, as created in 1905 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This depiction of Liberty remains the most popular American coin design in history, even 110 years after it was first created.
The reverse features sculptor Miley Busiek’s depiction of a family of nesting bald eagles. Her image, created specifically for and featured only on American Gold Eagles, shows a male bald eagle returning to its nest. At the nest, a female bald eagle stands guard over the hatchlings within.
Each of these coins was produced by the United States Mint’s West Point Mint facility. All proof American Gold Eagles are struck at West Point, with the Philadelphia and San Francisco facilities contributing to the program as a whole.
