The coins in the 5 oz release for the Year of the Dragon had an unlimited mintage when first issued. This meant the Perth Mint would strike the 2012 Year of the Dragon design from its original release point until the end of 2012 when the next design in the series was available. As a result, a total of 31,664 coins were struck during the coining period for the 2012 Year of the Dragon design.
The fifth position in the Chinese lunar calendar, the dragon actually arrived to the meeting with the Jade Emperor sixth among the 12 animals that responded. However, the dragon had stopped along the way to the meeting to help someone suffering from drought. After making rain for the individual, the dragon was given the fifth position by the Jade Emperor for his good deed.
On the obverse of 2012 Australian Silver Lunar Dragon Coins is an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. This design is the popular fifth-generation portrait of the Queen from Australian coinage. It was originally created in 1998 for the Royal Mint of England by Ian Rank-Broadley.
The reverse side of 2012 5 oz Silver Lunar Dragon Coins features a depiction of the Chinese dragon. Unlike the dragons of European folklore and mythology, the Chinese dragon does not breathe fire and does not have wings. Instead, the beast is more of a serpent-like creature with four or six legs, depending on the artwork. In this design, the dragon is shown in pursuit of the flaming pearl.
