El Yunque National Forest encompasses 28,434 acres on the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico. The region was created as a protected reserve in 1876 when Spain’s King Alfonso XII made it one of the first nature reserves in the Western Hemisphere.
Today, the image of El Yunque’s native creatures is featured on the America the Beautiful coin series. This particular coin was the first released in 2012, and was the first coin to feature imagery from a location other than an official US state. In total, the America the Beautiful coin series will include 56 coins representing each US state, the District of Columbia, and each of the nation’s five territories.
On the reverse side of the coin is the image of a Puerto Rican parrot and tree frog as they hide in the foliage of the El Yunque rainforest. Engravings include “Puerto Rico,” “El Yunque,” and the year of minting. The obverse features the common imagery of President George Washington as found on circulation quarters.
The United States Mint produces America the Beautiful coins at the Philadelphia and San Francisco mints. These particular coins are in near-perfect condition, with their full, original luster still visible and no more than two blemishes on the surface.
