Hawksbill turtles are native to the warm, tropical waters of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. The animals tend to congregate in impressive numbers off of the coasts of New Zealand the Cook Islands, even passing through the Cook Straight and approaching Fiji during certain periods of the year.
The New Zealand Mint’s Hawksbill Turtle coin is unique among other bullion products in that the same design is issued to two different nations at the same time. The Hawksbill Turtle is issued for the island of Niue, while the Fiji Taku is issued for Fiji. The name Taku is used because the local Fijian dialect uses that word for the hawksbill turtle.
On the reverse of each coin you’ll find the image of a hawksbill turtle swimming the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean. This side combines a strong, frosted finish on the design set with a deeply-mirrored finish on a sliver of the coin that bears the inscription “Fiji Taku.”
The obverse features the familiar right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. England’s longest-reigning monarch is accompanied by inscriptions of her name, the nation of issue, face value, and year of issue for the coin.
The New Zealand Mint is a private facility located in Auckland. It is not affiliated with the national government and does not have permission to produce legal tender for the local economy.
