The most popular product from the New Zealand Mint is the Hawksbill Turtle coin series. Introduced in 2010, the series actually has coins that are sold under two names depending upon the nation of issue. Today, JM Bullion offers the 2012 1 oz New Zealand Silver Fiji Taku coin in near-perfect condition courtesy of the NGC.
Coin Highlights:
- Ships in a protective slab to ensure the coin’s condition.
- Contains 1 oz of .999 pure silver.
- Bears a face value of $2 that is legal tender in the nation of Fiji.
- Issued a Mint State 69 grade by the NGC.
- Features the hawksbill turtle.
Hawksbill turtle coins were introduced as a silver bullion product for the nations of Niue and Fiji in 2010. The coins are issued under different names depending upon the country for which it is issued. The Niue coins are labeled Hawksbill Turtle Coins, while the Fiji coin is the Fiji Taku. The use of taku in place of hawksbill honors the local dialect of Fijians, and is the word they use for the hawksbill.
All 2012 1 oz New Zealand Silver $2 Fiji Taku coins in this JM Bullion listing have a near-perfect grade of MS69 from the NGC. Coins in this condition have their full, original luster from the mint, but may also feature a maximum of two minor detracting flaws.
The reverse features the image of the hawksbill turtle, so named because of its pointed beak. The creatures stand out in a crowd courtesy of their brightly colored shell patterns. Engravings on this side include the coin’s weight, metal content, and purity, as well as the phrase “Fiji Taku.”
On the obverse you’ll find the right-profile portrait of England’s Queen Elizabeth II. Used on all New Zealand Mint coins, Her Majesty became the kingdom’s longest reigning monarch in the summer of 2015, surpassing her grandmother’s time on the throne.
The New Zealand Mint is not the sovereign mint of the nation, but rather a privately-owned enterprise in Auckland. All New Zealand dollars and coinage are produced overseas at the Royal Canadian Mint or Royal Mint in London.
