The Mexican Mint, established in 1535, is the oldest mint in the Americas. Originally used to produce currency for the Spanish Empire’s western colonies, the Mexican Mint is now the sovereign mint of Mexico. The four fractional-ounce coins were not issued in 2012, the first time since 2000 that these coins were not issued.
Winged Victory, or the Angel of Independence, is the focal point of the design on the Gold Libertad. The Angel of Independence stands atop a 36-meter column on the Paseo de la Reforma as one of Mexico’s most iconic monuments. Inaugurated in 1910 to commemorate the centennial of Mexico’s independence movement, the golden winged figure represents Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, holding a laurel crown and broken chains that symbolize freedom from Spanish colonial rule.
The obverse of the 2012 Mexican Gold Libertad comes with the image of the Mexican coat of arms. The modern seal is shown here with its powerful golden eagle on a prickly pear cactus as it devours a snake. The seal is surrounded by 10 historic versions of the same emblem, including the 1524 Codex Mendoza insignia at the top of the design element.
On the reverse of 2012 1 oz Gold Libertad Coins is Winged Victory. Located at the top of the Mexican Independence Victory Column, Victory looks out over Mexico City with the mountain peaks of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl featured in the distant background field.
