The Australian Silver Koala coin is like the Silver Kookaburra in that it uses a new depiction of the koala each year. The Perth Mint features this native marsupial species in a different relief each year, sometimes depicting just one koala and sometimes using a family unit.
On the reverse of the 2012 1 oz Australian Silver Koala Coin, you’ll find a single koala lying along the branch of a tree taking a nap. The koala is one of the least active species in the world, napping for as much as 20 hours in a year. The obverse of 2012 Australian Silver Koalas features the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen’s right-profile portrait is the fourth-generation design and was created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley for the Royal Mint of England.
