The Australian Platinum Platypus holds a unique position in the history of Perth Mint platinum bullion coinage. The Platinum Koala was the first platinum bullion coin from Perth, issued from 1988 to 2000. Following its suspension, the Platinum Platypus was introduced in 2011 as the mint resumed platinum production. However, the Platinum Platypus was produced only through 2018, eventually being suspended in favor of introducing a new Platinum Kangaroo in 2019. Right now, 2012 1 oz Australian Platinum Platypus Coins are available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Each of the 2012 1 oz Australian Platinum Platypus Coins comes with an acrylic capsule. The 2012 release in this series had the second-highest mintage at 26,580 coins. Only the debut issue in 2011 had a higher mintage, selling out its maximum allowable mintage of 30,000 coins. Subsequent issues from 2013 to 2018 had far lower mintages, with the closest date (2015) reaching only half that of the 2012 coin.
The platypus represents one of evolution’s most extraordinary experiments, surviving as a living link to the early branching of mammalian evolution over 100 million years ago. These remarkable monotremes inhabit freshwater environments along Australia’s eastern coastline and Tasmania, from tropical Queensland rainforest streams to temperate Tasmanian rivers.
The obverse of the 2012 Australian Platinum Platypus features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here in the famous 1998 effigy from Ian Rank-Broadley. This design shows Elizabeth II wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara.
On the reverse of 2012 1 oz Platinum Platypus Coins, you’ll find a depiction of the animal swimming underwater. Platypuses construct elaborate burrow systems in riverbanks, requiring stable waterways with suitable nesting sites, adequate food supplies of aquatic invertebrates, and minimal human disturbance.
