American Gold Eagle coins are struck in three different versions each year. The bullion coin is the official coin of the US, while the proof coin is the primary collectible version of the American Gold Eagle collection. Since 2006, the low-mintage burnished coins are struck as a high-value collectible coin as well.
The 2012 1 oz American Gold Eagle coins represent the largest weight available in the Gold Eagle series. Other available weights in the collection are all fractional, with those weights including a 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz option.
On the obverse of all 2012 1 oz American Gold Eagle coins is the image of Liberty as she walks forth into an unknown future from the capital of Washington DC. There is freedom in her form, as her robes and hair flow in the wind, and the US Capitol Building is visible at her feet as the rays of the sun outline her figure from behind.
The reverse of the American Gold Eagle coin features a family of nesting bald eagles. Created in 1986 by Miley Busiek, this design is exclusive to the American Gold Eagle and includes the image of a male bald eagle flying over the nest, where a group of hatchlings is at rest under the watchful eye of a female.
All American Gold Eagle coins are products of the United States Mint, and are now produced in all weights and versions by the West Point Mint facility.
