Giant pandas exhibit a fascinating habit known as “handstands” while marking their territory. They walk backward up against a tree, holding on with their forelimbs, and then lift their hindquarters as high as possible to leave their scent marks higher up on the tree. This unusual behavior allows them to mark territory at a greater height than would otherwise be possible, potentially making their scent more noticeable to other pandas in the area. Scientists believe this elaborate marking ritual plays a crucial role in communication between solitary pandas during mating season.
The obverse of the 2012 Chinese Gold Panda comes with a depiction of the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This building is the central structure within the larger Temple of Heaven Complex, a Taoist religious site built in south-central Beijing in the early 15th century.
On the reverse of 2012 1/10 oz Gold Panda Coins, you will find a depiction of two Giant Pandas. In this design, an adult panda is shown next to its young cub. Mother pandas spend a great deal of time raising young cubs, showing them the necessary skills for survival.
