The Proof American Gold Eagles are available in four weights each year ranging from a 1 oz gold coin to a 1/10 oz gold coin. The series is unique in that all four weights were introduced at different times. The first of those was, however, the 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle which remains the most popular option for collectors and investors of American coinage. Today, JM Bullion offers you the 2011-W 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin!
Coin Highlights:
In 1986, the United States Mint introduced the American Gold Eagle Series. The collection initially featured 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold BU coins. That same year saw the release of a 1 oz proof coin. The remaining proof coins were issued in 1987 (1/2 oz) and 1988 (1/4 oz and 1/10 oz). Throughout the history of the coin program, the bullion coin is the only one to have been struck every year. The Proof American Gold Eagle has been struck every year since 1986, with the exception of 2009. 2011 marks the collection’s 25th anniversary!
For the obverse field of the 2011-W 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin, all of the coins feature the image of Lady Liberty. This design was curated by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907. He had been commissioned by President Roosevelt to forge a new design for American gold coinage. He ended up coming up with the depiction of Liberty striding confidently forward into an unknown future with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other.
For the reverse field of the 2011-W 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin, all of the coins are engraved with the family of American bald eagles. They are featured in their nest while the female bald eagle keeps an eye on her young hatchlings.
