The United States Mint set mintage caps on the individual Gold Eagles at 30,000 coins and this total allotment would eventually sell out. However, the total allotment of 1 oz gold coins didn’t sell out because the Proof American Gold Eagle 4-Coin Set did not sell out for the year.
On the obverse face of all 2011 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagles is a design of Liberty which revolutionized American coin designs. President Theodore Roosevelt launched an initiative during his administration to revitalize all American coin designs, and this vision of Liberty from Augustus Saint-Gaudens was the first to appear on American coins when it graced the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933.
The reverse side of 2011 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coins features an image of American bald eagles. In the design, a female eagle extends a wing to shelter a young hatchling in the nest as a male eagle flies overhead with a branch in its talons. This design is exclusive to American Gold Eagles and was created in 1986 by Miley Busiek.
