Designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, this visual shows Liberty’s figure in front-facing relief with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The image of Liberty is encircled by stars and framed by sun rays.
For the reverse of 2011-W Proof American Gold Eagles, the mint features a depiction of a family of bald eagles. The design shows a female eagle in the nest with hatchlings while a male eagle flies overhead. This work of art was created by Miley Busiek for the US Mint in 1986 and featured exclusively on the Gold Eagle coins.
Saint-Gaudens created what many consider the most beautiful American coin design, featuring a dynamic Liberty striding forward with torch and olive branch, her robes flowing in the wind. This neoclassical masterpiece, commissioned by President Theodore Roosevelt, broke from traditional static coin imagery to capture movement and artistic grandeur.
