The American Silver Eagle is widely recognized as the most collected silver coin in the world, with more than 47 million pieces sold in 2015 alone. In 2011, the United States Mint marked the 25th anniversary of the American Silver Eagle program by issuing a special five-coin collection. This set brought together multiple versions of the Silver Eagle, including bullion, proof, and uncirculated editions, along with two unique anniversary strikings: a reverse proof and a second uncirculated coin. Right now, certified 2011 American Silver Eagle 25th Anniversary 5-Coin Sets are available from JM Bullion.
Coin Set Highlights:
Each 2011 American Silver Eagle 25th Anniversary 5-Coin Set comes with individual slabs for each coin and Proof or Mint State 69 certifications. Coins with these grades are near-perfect specimens with full, original mint luster and a maximum of two minor flaws. These flaws are limited to minuscule contact marks or hairlines that must be located outside the primary focal points.
To honor the 25th anniversary in 2011, the US Mint prepared this five-coin collection featuring several standard Silver Eagle issues. These include the Proof Silver Eagle with a “W” mint mark, the bullion version without a mint mark struck at West Point, and the burnished uncirculated coin also struck at West Point with the “W” mark.
Two additional anniversary strikings complete the collection. One is an uncirculated Silver Eagle from the San Francisco Mint bearing the “S” mint mark. The other is a reverse proof Silver Eagle from the Philadelphia Mint with the “P” mark, adding a distinctive finish to the set.
The reverse proof format provides a unique contrast. The design elements are struck with a bright, polished surface, while the fields of the coin are given a frosted appearance, resulting in a clear distinction between background and imagery.
On the obverse of each 2011 American Silver Eagle is Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty. First introduced in 1916 for the Walking Liberty Half Dollar, this design remained in use until 1947 and has long been considered one of the most admired depictions in US coinage.
The reverse side of each 2011 1 oz Silver Eagle Coin carries John Mercanti’s modern version of the heraldic eagle, a design that connects to a tradition of American coinage symbols reaching back to the 19th century.
