The Mexican Mint’s introduction of the Silver Libertad Series took place over the course of 26 years, expanding from one coin weight to seven in total. The first coin introduced was the 1 oz silver coin, which was the only option from 1982 to 1991. In 1991, four fractional-ounce coins were introduced, followed by 2 oz and 5 oz coins in 1996. The last coin introduced was the 1 Kilo coin in 2008.
All 2011 5 oz Mexican Silver Libertad Coins offered here are available with protective plastic. The 5 oz silver coin is the second largest in the series behind the 1 Kilo coin. It has been available annually since 1996. The 2011 issue had a mintage of 10,000 coins in total.
For the obverse design of the 2011 Mexican Silver Libertad, the mint feature the national coat of arms of Mexico. This design includes a ring with 10 historic versions of the seal around the outer edge of the design field. The central design captures the modern coat of arms with the golden eagle in left-profile relief as it battles a serpent from the perch of a prickly pear cactus.
In the reverse field of 2011 5 oz Silver Libertad Coins, the mint offers a depiction of Winged Victory. This symbol of the Mexican Revolution is shown as she is depicted at the top of the Mexican Independence Victory Column. The angelic figure holds a laurel wreath in one hand and broken chains in the other. The background field features the volcanic peaks of Popocatepelt and Iztaccihuatl.
