Vicksburg National Military Park commemorates the Battle of Vicksburg during the Civil War. After a 43-day siege by Union forces, the Confederates surrendered to the Union Army. The loss allowed the Union to seize the length of the Mississippi River and cut the Confederacy in half.
America the Beautiful is a 56-coin series planned by the United States Mint. It features five new coin designs each year, and was introduced in 2010. The program is scheduled to run through 2021, and will eventually feature all 50 states, five overseas territories, and the District of Columbia.
Each 2011 5 oz ATB Vicksburg Silver Coin has a near-perfect grade of MS69 from the NGC. Coins in this condition have full, original mint luster, but also feature a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. The DPL designation identifies a bullion coin with a deeply-mirrored, proof-like finish on the surface.
The obverse of the coin features the left-profile portrait of President George Washington, which is commonly used on the obverse of all ATB coins. This image was designed in 1932 by John Flanagan.
On the reverse is the image of a Union ironclad on the Mississippi River during the Battle of Vicksburg. It includes engravings of the park name, state of issue, and the year of issue for this ATB coin.
