The South African Gold Krugerrand has been minted since 1967 by the Rand Refinery and the South African Mint. It remains one of the most popular one-ounce bullion gold coins in the modern world. Today, JM Bullion offers you the 2011 1 oz South African Gold Krugerrand Coin!
Coin Highlights:
The Krugerrand is derived from the compound of the surname of a former South African political leader, Paul Kruger, who is known for bravely fighting off British forces during the brutal Second Boer War, and the rand, the official South African unit of currency. Every Krugerrand has a legal tender status, although, interestingly, they do not have any assigned face value like other gold bullion coins. Actually, their value is based solely on their composition which boasts 91.67 gold content and 8.33 copper components. This gives the coins a slightly orange tinge which is extremely radiant. Design-wise, Otto Schultz and Coert Steynberg take full responsibility for the obverse and the reverse respectively.
Prior to minting Gold Krugerrands, the South African mint manufactured gold sovereigns for the British government and this is displayed with the South African Pound gold coin which houses the same imagery found on the Krugerrand’s obverse, an effigy of Paul Kruger. He is the former President of the African Republic and a Boer Statesman known for fighting off British forces. He is depicted in a left profile by Otto Schultz to accentuate his intimidating features and sharp glare.
For the reverse, the Springbok is engraved. It is a native antelope depicted from its side profile leaping across green fields in a beautiful South African landscape and is characterized by sharp horns and a beautiful physique. This imagery that was curated by Coert Steynberg is the official emblem of South Africa.
