The Gold Libertad is a direct descendant of the 1921 Gold Centenario from the Mexican Mint, with its gold bullion and proof gold coins featuring different production histories since 1981. The obverse of 2011 1 oz Proof Gold Libertad Coins comes with a depiction of the national coat of arms. The modern Mexican seal is set at the center and shows a golden eagle in left-profile relief with its wings flexed as it battles a serpent from its perch on a prickly pear cactus. Surrounding the national seal are 10 historic versions of the same emblem.
On the reverse of the 2011 Proof Mexican Gold Libertad is an image of Winged Victory. The statue of Winged Victory is set atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column in Mexico City. In the background, you’ll see the volcanic peaks of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl.
Proof Gold Libertads were introduced in 1981 with 1 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1/4 oz gold options. The series was not consistent at first, with the next strike after 1981 coming in 1991. The coins were then issued from 1991 to 1994, in 2000, and since 2002 have been annual offerings.
These 2011 1 oz Proof Mexican Gold Libertad Coins are available with protective plastic capsules. Proof specimens feature frosted designs with mirrored background fields. The 2011 issue had a mintage of 3,000 coins. The highest recorded for this weight in the series was 596,000 which came with the 1981 debut.
