Canada is a land of many natural wonders. Among the diverse environments and wildlife in Canada is the powerful grizzly bear. One of the nation’s prominent residents, the grizzly, is featured on the reverse of one of the Royal Canadian Mint’s 2011 Canadian Wildlife Series. Today, you can purchase a 2011 1 oz Canadian Grizzly Silver Coin from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The Royal Canadian Mint produced a total of six coins in the Canadian Wildlife Series. The series focuses on some of the nation’s famous natural residents. Timberwolves were the first featured on the coins in 2011, followed closely by the grizzly. The cougar and moose were minted in 2012 and the pronghorn antelope and wood bison in 2013.
On the reverse side of the coin is William Woodruff’s image of a lone grizzly bear as it unleashes its menacing roar into the wilderness. In the background, the Canadian Rockies jut up toward the sky. Engravings include “Canada,” the coin’s purity, metal content, and weight, as well as a “WW” to honor the man behind the design.
The obverse side of the coin bears the traditional image of Queen Elizabeth II. Susanna Blunt created the latest right-profile portrait of the Queen in 2003, and her image is surrounded by engravings that read “Elizabeth II,” “5 Dollars,” and “2011.”
The Royal Canadian Mint was founded in 1908 with the primary purpose of refining precious metals extracted from the Yukon Territories. Over the course of the past century, the mint has struck gold bars to pay off British debt from World War I and produced the world’s first $1 million coin.
