The Perth Mint opened in 1899 and was the last of three colonial branches of the United Kingdom’s Royal Mint in Australia. The Perth Mint was originally responsible for refining gold from the gold rush in Western Australia as well as coining gold sovereigns and half-sovereigns for the British Empire. Following the opening of the Royal Australian Mint, the Perth Mint was handed over to the state government of Western Australia.
