When mints and refineries start producing fractional-weight coins, it’s usually not long before those smaller coins become more popular than their 1 oz counterparts. In recent years, the ¼ oz Mexican Gold Libertad has proven to be among the hottest coins in the series, enjoying the highest mintage level each year. Today you can purchase a 2011 ¼ oz Proof Mexican Gold Libertad Coin from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
- Just 2,000 coins were struck in this weight by the Mexican Mint!
- Contains ¼ oz of .999 pure gold.
- Features design motifs inspired by the gold Centenario.
- Struck in a brilliant proof finish.
Mexico’s Gold Libertad coin has a complicated mintage history. The first coins were introduced in 1981, with three different weights available in a bullion version. The first Proof Mexican Gold Libertad didn’t appear until 1989, with just a ½ oz coin offered. In 2004, the first ¼ oz coins were struck by the Mexican Mint.
Today, the Mexican Mint strikes the Proof Mexican Gold Libertad in a bullion and proof version, with five weights available in each version. The bullion coin has higher mintage levels, but the lower mintage numbers for proof coins make them hard to find.
On the obverse, the image of Winged Victory is featured in the center of the coin, with the twin volcanic peaks of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl rising up toward the heavens in the background. The coin’s face value, metal content, weight, year of minting, and purity are all engraved on this side.
The reverse features the nation’s coat of arms. Its official seal features a bald eagle atop its perch on a cactus branch, with a serpent in its talons and beak as it battles to contain the reptile. This image has served as the official seal of Mexico since its freedom from Spanish rule.
