In 2010, the United States Mint reintroduced its Proof American Gold Eagle coins after a one-year hiatus in 2009. The cancellation of the 2009 issue struck both the Gold Eagle and Silver Eagle coins in both proof and burnished options. The return of the collectible Gold Eagles in 2010 was met with intense demand from collectors. The 2010 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle is currently available for purchase online from JM Bullion with a perfect certification.
Coin Highlights:
The United States Mint is legally obligated under the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 to produce the gold bullion version of the American Gold Eagle to meet the demand of investors. Throughout the period of 2008 to 2010, gold prices experienced steady increases and set a number of new all-time highs in 2010.
As a result of rising gold prices and intense demand for the gold bullion version of the coin, the Proof American Gold Eagle was suspended in 2009. Both the proof and burnished versions of the coins were halted and there was speculation the US Mint may even suspend the Proof Gold Eagle in 2010. However, the coins were finally released in October to intense demand.
The demand for 2010 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagles was so intense that mintage increased by 29,000 coins to 59,480 and surpassed the recent highs of 2006 and 2007. The US Mint capped individual 1 oz mintage at 25,000 coins and an additional 39,000 for the 4-Coin Proof Gold Eagle Set. The individual allotment of 1 oz gold coins sold out for the year and was the first of three options to sell out.
On the obverse of Proof American Gold Eagle coins is the vision of Lady Liberty created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907. The reverse face includes Miley Busiek’s design of a family of bald eagles at their nest.
These 2010 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagles earned PF70 certifications from the NGC. Coins in this condition showcase full, original mint luster with no detracting flaws. UCAM coins have strong, frosted designs and deeply-mirrored, clear backgrounds.
