First issued in 2007, the United States Mint’s First Spouse Gold Coin Program was designed to commemorate Presidential spouses across the sweep of American history from the days of George and Martha Washington down to the early 1990s. Where Presidents were unmarried, the series invoked Lady Liberty as a kind of symbolic spouse, using designs drawn from coinage that was issued during the relevant administration. Such was the case with lifelong bachelor James Buchanan, whose Lady Liberty was inspired by the Liberty Head Quarter Eagle portrait. The 2010 1/2 oz Proof US Mint First Spouse Buchanan’s Liberty Gold Coin is available for online purchase from JM Bullion.

The fifteenth President of the United States had been a lawyer in Pennsylvania before beginning his career in politics. James Buchanan was a noted politician, diplomat, and statesman before he came to the White House, where he would eventually serve between 1857 and 1861, succeeded by Abraham Lincoln. He would be the last President to have been born in the 18th century.
The coin’s obverse field features Lady Liberty as she originally appeared on the Liberty Head Quarter Eagle coins of Buchanan’s era, accompanied by the inscriptions “1857” and “1861” denoting Buchanan’s time in office, along with the “W” mark of the West Point Mint and the lettering “2010,” “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “15TH PRESIDENCY.”
James Buchanan appears on the reverse field as a young man working at his Pennsylvania legal practice, accompanied by inscriptions of the country of issue, face value and purity, and the phrase “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
