The U.S. Mint’s First Spouses collection celebrates the spouses who served alongside Presidents with beautiful bullion coins. Unmarried Presidents, such as the lifelong bachelor James Buchanan, are commemorated in this series paired with a Lady Liberty design instead of a spouse. In the case of the half-ounce coin, the design matches the Liberty Head Quarter Eagle portrait that appeared on coinage between 1840 and 1907. The 2010 1/2 oz Proof US Mint First Spouse Buchanan’s Liberty Gold Coin is available in certified perfect condition from JM Bullion.

This 2010 Proof US Mint First Spouse Buchanan’s Liberty Gold Coin is struck in a half-ounce of pure gold, and comes with a label showing its grade officially certified by PCGS. A Proof 70 coin is a “perfect” specimen free of visible flaws, delivered in this case in a protective plastic slab.
James Buchanan served as the Fifteenth President of the United States. Notable as the last President to have been born in the 18th century, Buchanan was a lawyer in his home state of Pennsylvania before embarking on a career as a politician, statesman and diplomat that eventually brought him to the White House between 1857 and 1861, succeeded by Abraham Lincoln.
The coin’s obverse field features a classic portrait of Lady Liberty as she originally appeared on the Liberty Head Quarter Eagle coins of the 19th and early 20th centuries. She’s accompanied by the inscriptions “1857” and “1861” — the years of the Buchanan Administration — along with “2010,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “15TH PRESIDENCY.”
The reverse field features James Buchanan, depicted as a young man writing at his desk, perhaps working at his law firm. He is accompanied by inscriptions noting the coin’s country of issue, face value and purity, and the phrase “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
