The image comes from John Flanagan’s design, which was created for the quarter in 1932 to celebrate the first president’s 200th birthday. That design has graced the obverse of quarters ever since, though it got a small restoration for the ATB series to ensure the image was crisp to match the detailed reverse designs.
The reverse of the 2010 ATB Grand Canyon Silver Coin is especially detailed. It features an image of ancient granaries at the Grand Canyon. Prehistoric peoples used these granaries, which are small rooms carved high in the rock of the canyon, to store food and seeds away from the water and animals. The design is by Phebe Hemphill, who did work on several other ATB coins too.
