The designs in the Lunar Series II collection from the Perth Mint of Australia are some of the most coveted in the world today. Each release in the collection delivers a new design inspired by the characters of the Zodiac, or Chinese Lunar Calendar. The Lunar Series II collection ran from 2008 to 2019 and the Year of the Tiger occurred third in the series. The Lunar Series I collection launched the craze involving lunar-themed bullion coin designs. Introduced in 1996, the Perth Mint’s initial collection was the only one of its kind when it was first offered. By the time the Lunar Series II collection debuted in 2008, other mints still hadn’t caught on to the demand for these stunning design concepts.
Perth Mint’s collection, though not the only one of its kind anymore, remains the leader in terms of design and availability. Releases such as the 2010 Australian Gold Tiger bullion coins include 10 options in all for investors to choose from when buying gold. The 2 oz coin represents a middle ground along with the 1 oz option as other weights include four fractional weights and three coins of 10 oz or greater weight.
On the obverse of the 2010 2 oz Australian Gold Lunar Tiger Coin is a depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. This right-profile bust of Her Majesty was created for the Royal Mint of England in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley and served as the fourth-generation British coin design from 1998 to 2016, as well as the fifth-generation Australian coin design from 1998 to 2018.
The reverse side of 2010 Australian Gold Lunar Tiger Coins includes the image of a tiger’s head. The massive wild cat stares directly at the viewer with the Chinese character for tiger above its head, the Perth Mint’s “P” Mint mark to the right, and the phrase “Year of the Tiger” below.
The Perth Mint used unlimited mintages for coin weights such as the 2 oz Australian Gold Lunar Tiger. This means the mint struck the coins from initial release until the end of December 2010 as long as demand persisted, after which point production would halt. A total of 5,340 coins were eventually struck and sold as a result.
