In 1886, the world’s largest reserve was found in the heart of South Africa. In order to expand their market to the private investment sector domestically and around the world, the South African Chamber of Mines designed the world’s first modern bullion coin which collectors and investors have come to know as the Krugerrand. Today, JM Bullion offers you the 2010 1 oz South African Gold Krugerrand Coin!
Coin Highlights:
The South African Krugerrand has many feats to its name. It is the first coin in history to have exactly 1 troy ounce of gold content, and the first gold bullion coin not intended for domestic commerce. The denomination “Krugerrand”, named for early statesman Paul Kruger, was invented especially for this new coin, to give it legal tender status. This meant that, unlike gold rounds, the weight and purity of the Krugerrand were guaranteed by the government of South Africa. Two exceptional engravers remain the brilliant minds behind the designs. They are no other than Otto Schultz and Coert Steynberg who both respectively worked on the obverse and reverse of the Krugerrand.
For the obverse of the coin, Paul Kruger is featured in a left-profile portrait. He is the former President of the African Republic and Boer Statesman known for fighting off British forces. He is depicted by Otto Schultz as a man with intimidating features and a sharp glare. This design of Paul Kruger happened to first be used in the 1890s on the South African Pound gold coins.
For the reverse, the Springbok is engraved. It is a native antelope depicted from its side profile leaping across green fields. This imagery that was curated by Coert Steynberg is the official emblem of South Africa.
The Krugerrand is made from 22K (.917 fine) gold, alloyed with 8.33% copper. Known as “crown gold”, this traditional alloy was used to reduce wear and scratching.
