Mexico introduced the Libertad coin for the first time in 1981 in a brilliant uncirculated gold bullion coin, available in three different weights. However, the first Proof Mexican Gold Libertad wasn’t introduced until 1989, and regular production of the modern series didn’t start until 2005. It was in 2005 that the Mexican Mint introduced the proof coin in five total weights, with the 1/20 oz Proof Mexican Gold Libertad the smallest of the group.
The reverse side of each 2010 1/20 oz Proof Mexican Gold Libertad Coin bears the coat of arms for Mexico. In the image, a bald eagle sits atop a cactus branch as it does battle with a rattlesnake, which it holds tight with one talon as it clamps down with its beak.
On the obverse you’ll find the image of Winged Victory. A symbol of the Mexican people’s independence from Spain, a statue of her likeness was erected in the center of Mexico City in 1920 as the nation celebrated the 100th anniversary of the opening battle of the War of Independence.
Each of these proof coins is struck by the Mexican Mint using unique planchets, which are struck multiples times with die casts to create the beautiful proof finish found on each coin. Founded in 1535 by Spanish conquistadors, the Mexican Mint is the oldest operating facility in North America.
