The 15th President of the United States, James Buchanan served from 1857 until 1861, at which point Abraham Lincoln took over in the office. Buchanan is notable for being the final U.S. president to be born in the 18th century. Born in Cove Gap, Pennsylvania, Buchanan was also a lawyer in his home state before being elected to the House of Representatives. He also won the Pennsylvania senate race in 1934 and retained that position for 11 years.
