First introduced in 1979, the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin is among the oldest gold bullion coins available today. The series began with a 1 oz gold coin featuring .999 pure gold. In 1982, the Royal Canadian Mint expanded the collection by adding fractional-ounce options while also increasing the gold purity to an impressive .9999 fineness. Today, 2010 1/2 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins are available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
From 1979 to 2023, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was the only monarch ever to feature on the obverse of Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins. During that time, Elizabeth II was featured in three different portraits that showcased her maturation as the monarch of England. The final design to feature on the coins was created in 2003 by Susanna Blunt and it depicted Her Majesty at the age of 79.
All 2010 1/2 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins offered here come with individual plastic flips. The 1/2 oz Gold Maple Leaf is the largest of the fractional-ounce coins in this series. In 1982, the Royal Canadian Mint introduced 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coins. In 1986, the Royal Canadian Mint introduced these 1/2 oz coins. In later years, 1/20 oz (1993) and 1 Gram (2014) gold coins would also be introduced.
On the obverse of 2010 Canadian Gold Maple Leafs is a portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The final effigy of Elizabeth II to grace Gold Maple Leaf Coins, this design shows the Queen in right-profile relief and was the lone portrait of her reign to feature on a Canadian coin without a crown on her head.
The reverse side of 2010 1/2 oz Gold Maple Leaf Coins comes with an iconic image. The sugar maple leaf shown here was created in 1979 by Walter Ott and is also used on all silver, platinum, and palladium variants of the coin. The maple leaf is the well-known national emblem of Canada.
