American Platinum Eagles were introduced by the United States Mint in 1997. The coins feature an obverse design (1997-2017) from John Mercanti, as well as rotating reverse designs (1997-2017).
Initially, the collection featured BU and Proof specimens in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz platinum. However, in 2009 the US Mint suspended all four BU coins in the series and all three fractional-ounce proof coins, leaving only the 1 oz Proof Platinum Eagle to continue on an annual basis.
A bust of the Statue of Liberty is found on the obverse of 2009-W 1 oz Proof Platinum Eagle Coins. This design from John Mercanti offers a front-facing look at the head of the Statue of Liberty.
Four different faces are shown in an arch on the reverse of 2009-W Proof American Platinum Eagle Coins. This design is the first in the Preamble to the Constitution design series and shows four female faces on the left meant to signify the diversity of America’s population.
