The 2009 Gold Double Eagle was designed using an ultra high relief appearance and is available in perfect MS70 condition. These coins also have a special gold foil label which identifies each one as being from the first day of minting at the Philadelphia Mint. Each coin has been certified to be a perfect Mint State 70 grade by the PCGS and contains 1 troy ounce and of 24k, .999 pure gold.
Coin Highlights:
During 2009, nearly 100 years after the original Gold Double Eagle was released, the US Mint decided to produce a special commemorative version of these popular coins. These coins are struck using special dies which give each one an ultra high relief appearance. This means that the main images on the obverse and reverse are raised above the background in such a way that they stand out more. The special 2009 Ultra High Relief coins feature an almost identical design to the original coins from 1907 and were minted in very limited numbers.
Minted for only one year in 2009, less than 120,000 coins were ever struck at the Philadelphia Mint. On their obverse side is the image of a walking lady liberty with the inscription “LIBERTY” stamped above her head. The year is also inscribed to the bottom right of the coin which reads “MMIX;” the roman numerals for 2009. On the coin’s reverse side is the large image of an eagle in mid-flight.
With an extremely limited mintage of approximately 115,000 and even less of them receiving a perfect MS70 grade with a gold foil label, these coins have become extremely popular among both coin buffs and numismatists. Today, you can purchase one of these historic coins from JM Bullion in perfect condition.
