The 2009 Ultra High Relief Gold Double Eagle is available in perfect MS70 condition with a proof like finish. Each coin has been certified to be a perfect Mint State 70 grade by the Numismatic Guarantee Corporation. Every 2009 Gold Double Eagle weighs 1 troy ounce and was struck by the US Mint using .999 pure gold. These particular coins were only minted for one year in limited numbers, making them highly desirable among collectors.
Coin Highlights:
In 2009, the US Mint decided to realize the original plans of Augustus Saint Gaudens to mint his gold double eagle coin in an ultra high relief. Originally, in 1907 the minting technology wasn’t available to accomplish Saint Gaudens original design plans. Each 2009 coin contains a similar design to the original coins with an image of lady liberty on the obverse and a flying eagle on the reverse.
The Gold Double Eagle was minted from 1907 to 1933, making it one of the last US coins to contain 90% pure gold. Unlike these 2009 commemorative coins, the original contained less gold content; about .9675 troy ounces of pure gold. Both the original coins and the 2009 rendition both have a legal tender value of $20 US Dollars. Today, the original coins are among one of the most sought after US Mint gold coins ever produced.
On the obverse of the 2009 rendition of the gold double eagle is the image of a standing lady liberty. The word “LIBERTY” is inscribed directly above her head while she holds an olive branch and a torch in opposing hands. In this depiction, Lady Liberty is wearing a traditional gown with rays of sunlight surrounding her. To her right is the minting year (2009) inscribed using Roman numerals.
The reverse of the coin shows a large eagle in flight. Below it is an image of the sun with rays protruding outwards. Surrounding the sun is the phrase “IN GOD WE TRUST” while above the eagle are the phrases “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS.”
