Introduced in 1907, the Saint-Gaudens Lady Liberty image is one of the most popular in American coining history. The image was first used on the $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin by the United States Mint from 1907 to 1933. In 1986, it was revived by the US Mint for the American Gold Eagle bullion coin. In 2009, the United States Mint finally struck the Lady Liberty design the way Augustus Saint-Gaudens intended a century earlier. Now, 2009 1 oz Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coins are available to you for purchase online from JM Bullion in near-perfect condition.
Coin Highlights:
Augustus Saint-Gaudens was commissioned directly by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1905 to help lead a movement to redesign and modernize America’s circulation currency. Saint-Gaudens originally created four different Liberty designs that he submitted to the United States Mint. His images for the $10 Eagle and $20 Double Eagle Gold Coins were eventually selected by the mint for use on the latter denomination.
Saint-Gaudens’ original intention for the design of Lady Liberty leading the nation forward into the future was to present the image in high-relief. However, in 1907 the United States Mint lacked the technological innovation to regularly strike the image in high relief with consistency. US Mint Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber had to make modifications to the design to accommodate the mint’s coining presses for high-volume striking of the image.
On the obverse of 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coins is Lady Liberty. This front-facing bust of Liberty captures her figure walking away from Washington D.C. The nation’s capital is visible in the background, with the US Capitol Building shown in great detail. Rays of sunshine frame her figure as she holds out a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other.
The reverse side of 2009 1 oz Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coins offers Saint-Gaudens’ original eagle design. The American bald eagle is shown flying over the sun as its rays of light reach toward the edges of the coin design.
These 2009 1 oz Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coins are near-perfect specimens. Mint State 69 coins showcase full, original mint luster with a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. Those flaws are limited to minuscule contact marks or hairlines and must be located outside the primary focal points of the coin. Each coin has an edge-lettered strike of “E Pluribus Unum” and an ultra-high-relief strike with greater visual depth to the field and raised, 3D relief on the design.
