Arguably the most beautiful coin design to ever feature on gold coins from the United States Mint is the Liberty effigy from Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This iconic image was created in 1907 and intended for high-relief coining, but the US Mint lacked the technology at the time to bring that dream to life. In 2009, the US Mint made good on Saint-Gaudens’ vision. Now, 2009 Ultra High Relief Gold Double Eagle Coins in near-perfect condition are available to you for purchase online from JM Bullion.

In 1907, Augustus Saint-Gaudens developed a design that would go on to feature on the $20 Gold Double Eagle circulation piece. This front-facing effigy of Liberty was designed to be struck in high relief by the US Mint. It featured a ring of 46 stars around the design element with sun rays in the background.
However, the US Mint did not have the technology at the time to reliably, consistently strike a high-relief design for circulation coins. When the US Mint sought to revive the design with the specifications Saint-Gaudens intended, that dream became a reality in 2009. Digital mapping was used to come up with a new die and 24-karat gold was chosen for the content of the coins to ensure a more malleable alloy that would work for ultra-high-relief striking.
The obverse of 2009 Ultra High Relief Gold Double Eagle Coins depicts Liberty in front-facing relief. She carries a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. Liberty’s figure stands out gracefully from the field of the coin with its sunken depth.
On the reverse of the 2009 Gold Double Eagle Coin, the mint features the image of the American bald eagle soaring through the sky. The sun is shown rising along the bottom edge of the design field. Two changes occurred with the 2009 die and coin striking. For starters, 50 stars were struck in the ring on the obverse to reflect the number of states now in the Union. Additionally, the phrase IN GOD WE TRUST was added to the reverse between the sun and its rays.
These 2009 Ultra High Relief Gold Double Eagles are available in near-perfect condition. Mint State 69 coins showcase full, original mint luster with no more than two minor flaws. Those flaws are limited to minuscule contact marks or hairlines and must be located outside the primary focal points. The PL designation means these coins have some proof-like visuals that include the appearance of frosted designs and/or mirrored fields.
