Few others played as big a role during the golden age of American coin design than sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. His double eagle gold coin design from 1907 was featured on the $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle, commissioned by President Theodore Roosevelt, and is used today on the American Gold Eagle. Now, you can own a special commemorative 2009 Ultra High Relief Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle from JM Bullion with an MS70 grade from the PCGS.
When Saint-Gaudens was originally designing coins for the United States Mint, technology was limited in its ability to meet the vision he had for coin designs. With a touch of 21st-century technology, Saint-Gaudens’ iconic gold double eagle imagery has come to life on an ultra-high-relief coin. Original Saint-Gaudens coin plasters were digitally mapped and recreated by the US Mint in order to strike these stunning coins.
Each of these 2009 Ultra High Relief Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins has received an MS70 grade from the PCGS, meaning they were perfectly struck by the mint. On the obverse side is Saint-Gaudens’ classic image of Lady Liberty, striding forward with a torch in her right hand and olive branch in her left. The reverse bears the image of a bald eagle in flight.
Alterations were made to update this coin for the 21st century. Four stars were added to the obverse side of the coin, surrounding Lady Liberty, to reflect the 50 states of the US. On the reverse, the inscription “In God We Trust” was added as well. Given the thicker edge of an ultra-high-relief coin, the engraving “E Pluribus Unum” was added. Each coin is struck in 24-karat gold instead of the standard 22-karat gold used on the American Gold Eagle, for example.
