American Silver Eagle coins are popular silver bullion specimens from the US Mint that investors around the world seek out as a steady source of silver. The US Mint issues the coins in tubes of 20 or Monster Boxes of 500 coins, while authorized dealers have individual specimens available in plastic flips. The 2009 release of American Silver Eagle was the 24th in the history of the series and was, at the time, a record for the series. From 2008 to 2015, the American Silver Eagle set a number of records for its annual mintage figures. The 2009 release had a total of more than 30 million, surpassing the record of 20 million coins set just one year earlier in 2008.
On the obverse of 2009 American Silver Eagle Coins is a depiction of Liberty known as Walking Liberty. The design was created in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman and debuted on the US Half Dollar that same year. The image shows Liberty walking toward the sun on the horizon as she carries branches of oak and laurel in her left hand. The American flag is draped around her figure.
The reverse side of the 2009 American Silver Eagle features the heraldic eagle of the United States. John Mercanti created this depiction of the eagle in 1986 for this series as a modernization of one of the nation’s historic coin designs. The bald eagle is in front-facing relief supporting the US national shield. The eagle clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. There is a triangular cluster of 13 stars over the eagle’s head.
