The Mexican Silver Libertad coin program debuted in 1982 with a 1 oz silver BU coin for investors. The collectible Proof Silver Libertad coins were first issued in that same weight, 1 oz silver, in 1983, but not regularly available until 1986. In 1996, the Mexican Mint expanded the series for a second time by introducing 2 oz and 5 oz silver coins.
All of the 2009 2 oz Proof Mexican Silver Libertad Coins in this product listing comes with an individual acrylic capsule. The Mexican Mint maintains very low mintage figures for all of its coins, including the proof versions of the Silver Libertad. In 2009 in the midst of the Great Recession, the Mexican Mint actually saw its highest mintage on record for the 1 oz Proof Silver Libertad at just 6,200. The next closest figure is a mintage of 5,000 coins in 2018.
The obverse side of the 2009 2 oz Proof Mexican Silver Libertad features a bust of Winged Victory. Based on the goddess Victoria that was once worshipped by victorious generals in the ancient world, Victoria as shown here comes from the Mexican Independence Victory Column in Mexico City. She stands confidently at the top of the column with a laurel wreath in one hand and broken chains in her other hand. Behind her figure in the distance are the volcanoes of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl.
On the reverse face of 2009 2 oz Proof Silver Libertad Coins, you will notice the Mexican coat of arms. The national coat of arms features a golden eagle battling with a serpent as it sits perched on a cactus. The wreath below is made of laurel and cactus, with the nation of issue inscribed above. On these larger coins in the series, the 10 historic versions of the national seal are featured around the edge of the border field.
