Introduced in 1981, the Mexican Gold Libertad is the oldest coin in the broader Mexican Libertad Series. Gold Libertads consist of 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz gold options, with the 1 oz gold coin among three weights that were first released back in 1981. Since 2002, the Mexican Mint has struck these coins on an annual basis. Today, 2009 1 oz Mexican Gold Libertad Coins are available from JM Bullion.

Production of the Mexican Gold Libertad was spotty and inconsistent through its first two decades of availability. The 1 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1/4 oz gold coins were first issued in 1981, but no further issues of the coins occurred until 1991. In 1991, the Mexican Mint resumed coining while adding 1/10 oz and 1/20 oz coins. These five weights continued through 1994, were halted until 2000, and then halted again in 2001. Since 2002, production has been consistent.
All of these 2009 1 oz Mexican Gold Libertad Coins come with a protective plastic flip. The mintage of 6,200 coins may seem low, but this is actually the highest mintage figure between 2003 and 2022 in this series.
The obverse of 2009 Mexican Gold Libertads features the modern Mexican coat of arms. This image of the golden eagle on a prickly pear cactus as it battles a snake is based on the Aztec Codex Mendoza. Around this modern design, you’ll find 10 historic designs of the Mexican coat of arms, including the Aztec Codex Mendoza image that appears at the 12-o-clock position along the edge of the field.
On the reverse of the 2009 1 oz Gold Libertad Coin, you will find the image of Winged Victory. A symbol of Mexican resistance and perseverance during the revolution, Winged Victory is shown in three-quarter relief with a laurel wreath in one hand and broken chains in the other. She stands atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column with the volcanic peaks of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl in the distance.
