The maple leaf has a rich history as a symbol of Canada, representing the country’s natural beauty, resilience, and identity. Long before Canada was colonized, Indigenous peoples in the region were familiar with the maple tree and its leaf. Some Indigenous groups, such as the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy, used the maple tree sap as a source of food and created maple sugar.
Canadian Maple Leaf bullion coins debuted in 1979 with only a 1 oz .999 pure gold coin offered by the Royal Canadian Mint. Expansion in the series came in waves over the next several years. The first .9999 pure gold coins were issued starting in November 1982, with 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coins added to the series. Further additions came in 1993 with a 1/20 oz coin and 2014 with a 1 Gram coin.
Queen Elizabeth II is featured on the obverse of 2009 1/10 oz Gold Maple Leafs. This 2003 design from Susanna Blunt depicts the Queen at the age of 79. She is shown in right-profile relief and captured without a crown, one of the few effigies of Her Majesty during her reign to lack a crown or tiara.
A sugar maple leaf is shown in the reverse design of 2009 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins. The maple leaf became deeply ingrained in Canadian national identity, symbolizing unity, diversity, and pride in the country’s natural heritage. It is widely recognized both within Canada and internationally as a symbol of Canada.
These 2009 1/10 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins are available to you with protective plastic. The 1/10 oz gold coin is the middle option available in the series, smaller than the 1 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1/4 oz coin, but larger than the 1/20 oz and 1 Gram coins.
