American Gold Buffalo coins have been issued regularly since the 2006 debut of the series. Though there was an intention early on to issue fractional-ounce Buffalos, just as the American Gold Eagle Series does, this only materialized in 2008 with fractional-ounce Proof and Burnished Gold Buffalos.
Fraser designed the Buffalo Nickel, also known as the Indian Head Nickel, which was in circulation from 1913 to 1938. The design featured the profile of a Native American chief on one side and a buffalo on the other.
In the obverse design of these 2008-W Proof American Gold Buffalo Coins, you will find Fraser’s depiction of a stoic indigenous figure. This design is a right-profile relief with a figure whose features are the combination of facial characteristics from three real-world tribal leaders from the early 20th century.
For the reverse design of 2008-W Proof Gold Buffalos, the mint features Fraser’s depiction of the mighty American bison. Inspired by Black Diamond, this image shows a buffalo on left-profile relief with its head down as it grazes on a mound of grass and dirt.
