In 2008, the US Mint issued fractional-ounce coins in the American Gold Buffalo Series for the first time, and this four-coin set was not the only one of its kind. The US Mint also released a Burnished Gold Buffalo in 2008 that included three fractional-ounce coins. In both cases, the US Mint issued these fractional-ounce coins in these versions just in 2008.
All of the 2008-W 4-Coin Proof American Gold Buffalo Sets come with coins in perfect condition. The set includes Gold Buffalo Coins in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz weights, all of which are PR70 specimens with no flaws and full, original mint luster. The coins in this set also have the deep-cameo designation, which means they feature strong, frosted designs and mirrored fields.
On the obverse of each coin in the 2008-W 4-Coin Proof Gold Buffalo Set is a right-profile relief of a stoic indigenous American. On the reverse side of each 2008 Proof American Gold Buffalo Coin, an American bison is depicted. These designs were originally created in 1913 by James Earle Fraser.
