The American Gold Buffalo Coin was introduced by the United States Mint in 2006. The first-ever 24-karat gold bullion coin to be issued annually by the mint, the Gold Buffalo revived James Earle Fraser’s popular artwork from the 1913 Buffalo Nickel. In 2008, the Gold Buffalo Series offered its first and only fractional-ounce coins. Today, 2008-W 4-Coin Proof American Gold Buffalo Sets in near-perfect condition are available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The Buffalo Nickel, officially known as the Indian Head nickel, was introduced in 1913 as a bold departure from the ornate Victorian designs that had dominated American coinage. Designed by sculptor James Earle Fraser, the coin featured a composite portrait of three Native American chiefs on the obverse and an American bison, modeled after Black Diamond from the New York Central Park Zoo, on the reverse. The design embodied the spirit of the vanishing American frontier and represented a move toward more distinctly American imagery in coinage.
All 2008-W 4-Coin Proof American Gold Buffalo Sets come with four individual coins, each one in its own slab. These coins are in PF69 condition, indicating full, original mint luster with a maximum of four minor flaws. These flaws must be located outside the primary focal points and are limited to minuscule contact marks or hairlines. The UCAM designation indicates a proof coin with strong, frosted devices and deeply-mirrored, clear fields. This set features 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz Gold Buffalo Coins.
On the obverse of each 2008-W Proof American Gold Buffalo is the portrait of an indigenous figure. Fraser is said to have used three real-life indigenous leaders of the early 20th century as inspiration for his portrait, combining their facial features to create this unique bust.
The reverse of the 2008-W Proof Gold Buffalo Coins features Black Diamond. This resident bison of the Central Park Zoo is shown here in left-profile relief, standing on a small mound of dirt.
