In 2006, the United States Mint broke the mold in its gold bullion production line by striking the nation’s first-ever 24-karat gold coin. The American Gold Buffalo featured the historic designs from the Buffalo Nickel coin introduced into circulation in 1913 and is offered by the United States Mint to this day as its only annual-release coin with .9999 pure gold. Right now, 2008-W 4-Coin American Gold Buffalo Sets are available to purchase online from JM Bullion.

Each 2008-W 4-Coin American Gold Buffalo Set from the United States Mint arrives inside of a square, wooden display box. The hardwood boxes had a matte finish and faux leather insert which housed the coins in beautiful fashion. Included with each purchase was a Certificate of Authenticity from the United States Mint.
The American Gold Buffalo Coins debuted in 2006, and by 2008 the United States Mint had opted to expand the collection. Previously available only in 1 oz gold for bullion and proof, the coins were made available in 2008 with fractional weights for the first time ever. Those weights included ½ oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz coins with nominal face values of $25 (USD), $10 (USD), and $5 (USD) backed by the federal government. The 1 oz coin has a $50 (USD) face value.
On the obverse of each coin in the 2008-W 4-Coin American Gold Buffalo Set is the American Indian head design. Originally used on the Buffalo Nickel, this right-profile portrait is an amalgamation of the facial features of various Native American tribal leaders of the day and features along with an engraving of “Liberty.”
The reverse of the American Gold Buffalo Coin captures the massive figure of an American bison. This animal was arguably the most important to the tribes of the American Plains and Upper Midwest, and this particular creature is based upon Black Diamond, a captive buffalo in the Central Park Zoo at the turn of the 20th century.
These 2008-W 4-Coin American Gold Buffalo Sets contain Brilliant Uncirculated coins with a “W” mint mark from the West Point Mint on the obverse face. This is the only year in which the United States Mint offered fractional-weight coins in this collection and there is a low mintage, so these sets are rare!
