One of the lesser-known options in the broader American Eagle Series is the Burnished Platinum Eagle. In 2006, the United States Mint introduced secondary collectible American Eagles in both the Silver Eagle and Gold Eagle Series. These coins were known as Burnished Eagles, or Uncirculated Eagles. The coins feature a unique matte finish achieved by first polishing the blanks in tumbling machines with a medium that would “burnish” the coin. While still available in the Silver Eagle and Gold Eagle collections, Burnished Platinum Eagles were only available from 2006 to 2008. Now, 2008-W 1/4 oz Burnished American Platinum Eagle Coins in perfect condition are available online from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
For the obverse of 2008-W 1/4 oz Burnished Platinum Eagle Coins, the mint features John Mercanti’s image of the Statue of Liberty. Designed in 1997 for the Platinum Eagle Series, this visual shows the head of the Statue of Liberty in front-facing relief with her impressive crown dominating the design field.
In the reverse design of the 2008-W Burnished American Platinum Eagle, the final design from the Foundations of Democracy Series is featured. The Proof and Burnished Platinum Eagles featured new reverse design each year, with the 2006-2008 Foundations of Democracy Series depicting symbols of the three branches of the Federal government. The 2008 design depicts Lady Justice with the American bald eagle as an emblem of the Judicial Branch.
The United States Mint offered the Burnished Platinum Eagles from 2006 to 2008 in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz options. Like its BU and Proof Platinum Eagle counterparts, the Burnished Eagle would lose its fractional-ounce options after 2008. In fact, the entire Burnished Platinum Eagle Series was cancelled after the 2008 release. The 2008-W 1/4 oz Burnished Platinum Eagle was the lowest minted in its weight among the three years and the second-lowest mintage among all Burnished Platinum Eagles behind only the 2008-W 1/2 oz Burnished Platinum Eagle.
These 2008-W 1/4 oz Burnished American Platinum Eagle Coins are in perfect condition. Mint State 70 coins showcase full, original mint luster and have no detracting flaws. Each one is housed in a protective plastic slab.
