In 2006, the United States Mint introduced a third version of the bullion coins in its popular silver and gold bullion collections. This new burnished coin had its own distinctive visuals and low mintage figures, offering a second collectible option each year. The Burnished American Gold Eagle debuted that year with the same four weights available in the bullion and proof versions, but the 2008 release was unique in that it marked the last of the fractional-ounce coins. Burnished Gold Eagles have a matte finish that sets each one apart from the bullion and proof versions in the series. Burnished coins are produced by first tumbling the gold blanks in a barrel with a burnishing, or polishing, medium. The coins are always handled with gloved hands and struck individually to ensure the visual appeal.
Burnished American Gold Eagle coins were originally available in the same four weights as the bullion and proof versions of the coin. However, the growing demand for gold bullion blanks during the onset of the Great Recession led the US Mint to halt the proof program in 2009 and the burnished program in 2009 and 2010. When the Burnished Gold Eagles returned, it was decided that only a 1 oz gold coin would be offered to ensure smaller blanks were available for the bullion and proof versions of the coin.
On the obverse of 2008-W 1/4 oz Burnished American Gold Eagle Coins is a depiction of Lady Liberty. This empowering image of Liberty depicts her as a leader of the nation. She walks toward the viewer in this design holding a torch out in her right hand to light the way and carries an olive branch symbolizing peace in her left hand.
The reverse side of 2008-W Burnished American Gold Eagle Coins features a family of American bald eagles. In this design, the bald eagle soars over the nest as another adult eagle watches over a young hatchling within the nest.
