James Earle Fraser’s Indian Head nickel design from 1913 was so popular that it has been recreated twice on the face of American coins. The first came in 2001 when it was featured on the Buffalo Silver Dollar commemorative coin. The latest reintroduction occurred in 2006 when it was placed on the American Gold Buffalo. You now have a chance to own the US Mint’s purest gold coin by purchasing a 2008 ¼ oz. American Gold Buffalo from JM Bullion with a Mint State 70 grade from the Professional Coin Grading Service.
The coins available in this product listing are certified by the PCGS as perfectly struck coins. On the Sheldon numeric scale (ranging 1-70), only those coins with full, original luster; sharp, attractive strike for the date and mint, and absolutely no contact marks are certified as Mint State 70.
American Gold Buffalo coins were introduced by the US Mint in 2006 as the purest gold coins ever produced by the Mint. Gold standards in US coins were dropped to .900 in 1837. The purity did not increase again until 1986 when the American Gold Eagle was introduced with .9167 pure gold. The American Gold Buffalo features .9999 pure gold and these ¼ oz. coins have a face value of $10.
Fraser’s Indian Head nickel was in production at the US Mint from 1913 to 1938. His American Indian chieftain, featured on the obverse, was designed by combining the facial features of three different chieftains from the early 20th century. His buffalo on the reverse side was inspired by Black Diamond, a resident of the Central Park Zoo in New York City during the early 1900s.
The United States Mint produced these 2008 American Gold Buffalo coins at the West Point Mint. This ¼ oz. coin is truly rare because it marks the only year in the coin’s production history that includes fractional weights. The ¼ oz. had an extremely low mintage of just 9,949 coins.
