The First Spouse Series from the United States Mint is a companion collection to the Presidential Medal Series. As each former President of the United States was featured in the medal series, so too was their spouse in the First Spouse 1/2 oz gold series. For those men who were bachelors or widowed during their presidency, the US Mint chose a historic image of Liberty for the series. Coin Highlights:
Van Buren’s presidency (1837-1841) was marked by an economic downturn known as the Panic of 1837. It was triggered by a combination of factors, including the collapse of speculative land bubbles, a decline in international trade, and the policies of Van Buren’s predecessor, Andrew Jackson. The economic hardships during his tenure contributed to his challenges in maintaining popularity and support.
Given President Van Buren was a bachelor, there is no First Lady to feature in the design of the First Spouse Series. As such, the US Mint chose to feature the famous Seated Liberty design. This image was created by Christian Gobrecht, the 3rd US Mint Chief Engraver, in 1836 for use on a variety of US denominations.
The obverse of 2008-W 1/2 oz US Mint Van Buren’s Liberty Gold Coins features the iconic Seated Liberty image. Here, Liberty is shown sitting on a rock with a staff in her left hand that is topped by a Phrygian cap and her right hand resting at her side atop the US national shield.
On the reverse of 2008-W US Mint First Spouse Van Buren’s Liberty Gold Coins, you will find a depiction of President Van Buren. He is shown sitting beneath a tree near his family home, a well-known gathering place in his lifetime for open political discourse.
