This series showcases the best of each state, and it highlights the things that make each state unique. This coin program launched in 1999, and it concluded with these five releases from 2008. The coins were released in the order in which the states were ratified or joined the Union. These final five states were Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Alaska, and Hawaii.
The obverse of each quarter features the well-known bust of President George Washington that is featured on all quarters. The reverse sides all feature different designs that are centered around specific qualities of the state they represent with a few common elements, such as the name of the state, the year it became a state, year of the release, and the phrase E Pluribus Unum.
On the reverse of the Oklahoma quarter, you will find the image of the Scissortail Flycatcher, the state bird, flying over Indian Blanket wildflowers, which are the state wildflower. The reverse of the New Mexico quarter features a topographical outline of the state with a Zia sun symbol. The Arizona quarter showcases the Grand Canyon with a Saguaro cactus. Alaskas quarter shows a grizzly bear clutching a salmon in its mouth. The Hawaii monarch King Kamehameha I is featured on the back of the Hawaii quarter as well as a map of the islands.
